Hostgator is a privately owned web hosting company founded in 2002. According to Hostgator official claims, they provide hosting service for more than 1,000,000 websites and lead in hosting reseller accounts with over 20,000 resellers. I believe this as when you go on the internet and do research about Hostgator you will easily notice that this is one of the most popular web hosting companies. You can get a Hostgator package starting from $7.95 a month and that’s for hosting unlimited websites. I actually started with Hostgator on a smaller package than that and as I needed more it was very easy to upgrade.

I have been a customer of Hostgator for 3 years and have stayed with them for some good reasons. One of the main reasons is that they have great uptime and the other is that they have unbelievable support. Over the years I have contacted them for help when most of the time it had nothing to do with them, however they gladly helped me out.

My personal examples of Hostgator’s fantastic support:

  • The most common problem I had was when I was learning how to build WordPress Websites I would crash the website by touching the code or doing something stupid. I have since learnt to backup the php code before editing it, however when I needed help, Hostgator always fixed it for me. I use to submit a ticket and they would get back to me fairly quickly, and always fix my problem. Then later on I relized they had instant chat. Boy were they sorry they got that with me around. I use it all the time.
  • Once someone hacked my forum and I agree it was my fault as I had not updated it for over a year. The place had no up to date security. Anyway Hostgator cleaned it all up for me, and told me I was right to re-install the forum and restore the database. Unfortunately I couldn’t do this. I got as far as installing the forum but the data base would not restore. I was desperate to get all the precious content and members back. Well guess what I told Hostgator I was having problems and they restored everything for me. I just could not believe it.
  • I have people I teach how to build WordPress websites and make money and when they have problems they come to me. At one stage I was so busy I could not help my customer so she contacted Hostgator and they fixed it for her..Again it was not their problem, it was a mistake that my customer had made.
  • I actually resell Hostgator Website hosting so this means that customers contact me for support. If I cannot answer their questions the Hostgator support always helps me out. Its my own webhosting business that I bought from Hostgator and I have their backing.

I have two packages with Hostgator and I host all of my precious WordPress Websites on these. In the early days I paid $4.95 a month for one website to be hosted, then upgraded to unlimited websites, and then bought Hostgator reseller hosting. They could crash and burn one of my websites and I would forgive them because they have just gone far above my expectations.

A few days ago I contacted Hostgator support for a general enquiry.
I received a support’s email reply within 10 minutes. My enquiry proceeded into a communication involving several emails. All of these support emails came within 1 hour.

That was amazing, and better than the usually very good support response I’ve had with them in the 2 years using them. I find it pretty funny that a few people have 1 bad experience with 1 support member and then whine and rant that the whole organization is flawed.

I’ll bet that these ‘complainers’ are probably at fault in not communicating their problem decently with ‘support’ and this is probably due to a typical poor communication they have contacting any other support too.

Good Features

While most other hosting companies will only allow you to have a certain number of MySQL database, you get unlimited (I repeat, unlimited!) MySQL database with Hostgator. That’s quite an advantage if you’re planning to build a huge web application.

Potential drawbacks with Hostgator

Yeah right. If you have to host your WordPress website then do it here. Some users might be not very happy with the price tag of Hostgator hosting. Without a doubt, Hostgator is a little pricey compared to most other web hosting companies. On average they are about $1 extra a month, however as I have stated before it is not about the price for me. Price does not help you when your website is down and you are loosing money and visitors by the hour. If a hosting comapny can keep my WordPress websites up on the internet without major dramas and stress to me then they are the one’s for me.

Happy with switch to Host Gator “How naive I must have been thinking my old hosting company was great. When the discontinued boxtrapper support, which is the only sure “bot” SPAM blocker, I switched to Host Gator. HostGator: You Had Me At ‘Hello! “After coming from such a bad experience at GoDaddy I had to post and share how really great HostGator has been just in the few days I’ve been a member. I so very much appreciate the minimalist design with HostGator’s web presence, including the home page and cPanel. Anyone who has a domain or host account with GoDaddy knows how busy their site is!
